This web page will help you use ePatch to monitor your heart. Early diagnosis and treatment of irregular heart rhythms may prevent serious health issues, so it is important that you follow all directions carefully. Apple is conducting this study with BioTelemetry, Stanford Medicine, and American Well to improve the technology used to identify irregular heart rhythms and to advance heart science.

Getting to Know ePatch

ePatch is a small, lightweight, body-worn patch sensor that adheres to the skin to monitor heart rhythms. ePatch continuously records and stores your heartbeats for up to 7 days, at which point the data can be downloaded and evaluated by cardiac monitoring professionals.

How the Monitoring Process Works

Through the app, you will be able to connect with a doctor who will further explain the notification and discuss next steps. Here’s what you need to know to complete your role in the Apple Heart Study 1.2:

Download and Install the Apple Heart Study 1.2 App on your Apple Watch and iPhone.

 

If an Irregular Heart Rhythm is Detected…

You will be notified on your Apple Watch and iPhone.

Discuss Next Steps with a Study Doctor.

You will be connected with a board-certified, licensed primary care or urgent care physician.

If You Qualify to Receive an ePatch Monitoring Kit…

Wear ePatch for 7 days, following all instructions included in the kit that you receive by mail.

Return Your ePatch Sensor for Analysis.

Follow instructions on how to return the ePatch sensor for analysis by a cardiac professional.

Receive a Report by Phone from an Apple Heart Study Physician.

You will receive a call to discuss the findings of your heart study.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Before Monitoring

I did not receive my ePatch monitoring kit.
Please contact the Study Telehealth Provider Team at 800-358-2286.

I no longer want to participate in ePatch monitoring.
Please contact the Study Telehealth Provider Team at 800-358-2286.

I cannot start monitoring right away.
It is important that you begin monitoring as soon as possible. ePatch is designed to be worn in everyday life, including during travel and exercise.

During Monitoring

How long should I wear ePatch?
Once applied, continue to wear ePatch for 7 days.

What if my ePatch begins to fall off, and I have not completed 7 days of monitoring?
Your monitoring kit includes a second patch. Please refer to page 12 in the Quick Start Guide included in your ePatch monitoring kit.

What if I have completed 7 days of monitoring, or my second patch has fallen off?
You are all done! Return the sensor using the pre-paid, pre-addressed envelope.

What if my skin is irritated from the adhesive?
Mild itching or irritation under the patch area may occur but is usually temporary.
If more significant itching or irritation develops or persists, contact the Study Telehealth Provider Team at 800-358-2286.

What if my skin is blistering or has open sores from the adhesive?
Please discontinue use and carefully remove ePatch from your skin. Please return the sensor using the pre-paid/pre-addressed envelope.

Can I swim, take baths, or shower while wearing ePatch?
Do not swim or take baths while wearing ePatch. You can shower normally.

Can I remove ePatch and then reapply it?
The electrode patch (adhesive part) is single-use only and should not be re-applied. Your kit does include a second electrode patch if the first loses its adhesive and begins to fall off.

What is the proper way to remove ePatch from my body?
Remove the device by gently peeling the patch from the skin.

Lights and Beeps

A solid green light is displayed on the ePatch sensor.
This is normal.

A flashing green light is displayed on the ePatch sensor.
This is normal.

If I tap the sensor, a green light displays.
This is normal.

There is a solid RED light on the sensor. What should I do?
You are all done! Return the sensor using the pre-paid, pre-addressed envelope.

After Monitoring

I cannot remove the sensor from the electrode patch and I have not completed 7 days of monitoring.
Return the sensor (attached to the electrode patch) using the pre-paid/pre-addressed envelope.

I cannot locate my return envelope.
Please contact the Study Telehealth Provider Team at 800-358-2286 for a replacement pre-paid, pre-addressed envelope.
